CNC HAAS Mill Restoration
Project Type
Thesis-Period Technical
Role
Diploma Student
Date
October 2023
As part of my thesis period, I undertook a comprehensive maintenance project for the CNC HAAS Mini Mill used in our laboratory. The project aimed to restore full operational performance, improve machining reliability, and document a sustainable maintenance process for future use.
Key Contributions:
• Mechanical Overhaul
Disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled key components including the milling table, spindle, carousel-type tool changer (plate, springs, extractor forks, keys, bushings, washers, bolts), vise, chuck, and tool holders.
• Axis & Motion Systems
Serviced the Y-axis way covers and applied fresh grease to the Y-axis linear guides to ensure smooth motion.
• Structural Maintenance
Cleaned and inspected sheet metal parts, inner and outer walls, and replaced damaged screws to improve machine integrity.
• Coolant System Restoration
Fully emptied, cleaned, and rebuilt the coolant tank, hydraulic circuit, and pump impeller. Refilled the system using fully synthetic Molyduval Aqualub CSA 10, creating detailed coolant refill formulas based on real-time level and concentration.
• Precision & Measurement
Used a refractometer for precise coolant concentration monitoring and designed scaled refill buckets for quick, accurate top-ups.
• Process Documentation
Authored an interactive HAAS maintenance manual and standardized coolant management procedures for future operators.
• Performance Enhancement
Improved coolant flow, optimized coolant concentration, and ensured stable air compressor performance to maintain consistent cutting conditions.
